A balança comercial do agronegócio brasileiro de 1989 a 2005 AgEcon
Barros, Geraldo Sant'Ana de Camargo; Silva, Simone Fioritti.
This study aims to analyze the agribusiness contribution to Brazil’s trade balance. A new classification of the agribusiness trade balance was proposed and used to analyze the aspects of the exported products –agricultural products, products of animal origin, industrialized foods and imported inputs – represented by fertilizers. Imports and exports vector autoregression models were used to explain the behavior of these variables. An increase of 1% in the attractiveness – product of the exchange rate by the international prices – boosts immediately the exports of non processed agricultural products by 1.71%, stabilizing at 2% after some trimesters. The attractiveness explains 60 to 74% of the forecast error variances of these exportats. It is noted that an...

A Case Study of China's Commercial Pork Value Chain AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Hu, Dinghuan; Fang, Cheng.
In China, with the cost of improved technology rising, surplus labor shrinking, and demand for food quality and safety increasing, it will be just a matter of time before the country’'s hog production sector will be commercialized like that of developed countries. However, even if China'’s cost of production converges to international levels, as shown in this case study, China may continue to retain some competitive advantage because of the labor-intensive nature of the marketing services involved in hog processing and meat distribution. The supply of variety meats offers the most promising market opportunity for foreign suppliers in China. The market may open further if the tariff rate for variety meats is reduced from 20% and harmonized with the pork...

A importância estratégica do potássio para o Brasil. Infoteca-e
KINPARA, D. I..
ABSTRACT: This paper presents the strategic importance of potassium (K) in Brazil, focusing four aspects: the function in the plant; the K content of Brazilian soil; the different K forms; and its demand in the Brazilian agricultural system. The K is not a structural element of plants, but it participates in many biochemical plant processes, like carbohydrates and proteins synthesis, showing its economical importance in terms of production. A major problem in Brazilian soils is the leaching process due to the rain regimes. Since k is a very soluble ion in the soil profile, it must be replaced in regular basics to the culture. There are five sources of K, all them of high solubility. Less soluble K compounds have been studied as a way to minimize the...

Agrárgazdaság és az „erős” forint AgEcon
Gazdag, Laszlo.
A Jegybank feladata a pénzstabilitás megteremtése és fenntartása, míg a többi cél (növekedés, foglalkoztatottság, egyensúly stb.) megvalósítása a gazdaságpolitikai eszköztár és intézményrendszer egyéb területeire tartozik. A pénzstabilitás primátusa ma már elfogadott a nyugati közgazdasági gondolkodásban. A valutaleértékelés kétélű fegyver, csupán az elavult exportszerkezetet konzerválja, a hatékonysági korlátok puhítása révén. A magyar gazdaság importfüggősége technikai jellegű, ezért a leértékelés csupán inflációs nyomást eredményez. Az agrárszektor részére a forint gyengülése sokkal több negatívummal járhatna, mint pozitívummal. Emelkedne az import eszközök ára, a felpörgő infláció révén szűkülne a belső piac. --------------------- Establishment and...

ALBERTA AND THE EU-27: PAST TRADE RELATIONS AND FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES AgEcon
Emter, Nicholas A.; Mirus, Rolf.
Canada and the EU-27 are negotiating a comprehensive economic partnership agreement against the backdrop of the stalled multilateral negotiations under the auspices of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The new agreement is expected to stimulate trade, investment, and technology transfer between the two partners. This report provides a review of the last 15 years of Alberta’s experience in exporting goods to the EU-27, with the goal of gaining insights into how freer trade could affect future exports to the region. First, we summarize the state of bilateral economic relations between the prospective partners, relying in part on a study jointly sponsored by the EU and the Government of Canada. The second part focuses on the exports to the EU from Alberta...

ALBERTA’S EXPORT EXPERIENCE UNDER FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS: 1988 - 2007 AgEcon
Mirus, Rolf; Tanerguclu, Hande.
The international involvement of Alberta-based businesses covers trade in goods, trade in services, and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), both inward and outward. Increasingly FDI is linked to trade in goods and services. Indeed, the export of services like consulting or construction engineering tends to involve the setting up of supporting facilities abroad (outward FDI), and exports of goods frequently necessitate the provision of maintenance services in their wake, either across the border or through an office abroad. Data on outward FDI by Alberta-based firms are not available, nor are data on exports of services by province of origin. Therefore an analysis of what has been happening to Alberta’s international commercial relations is of necessity...

ALBERTA’S EXPORT EXPERIENCE UNDER FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS, 1989-2008: TWENTY YEARS OF FREE TRADE AgEcon
Mirus, Rolf; Emter, Nicholas A..
The period of free trade from 1989 to 2008 coincided with a strong expansion of Alberta’s exports. Our review shows that several factors contributed to this success. In addition to favorable trends in energy and commodity prices, the improved access to the US and Mexican markets that resulted from the CUSFTA and NAFTA are shown to be major causes of the positive development of Alberta’s exports. In particular, the significant increase in manufacturing exports can be attributed to the free trade agreements because manufacturing products face higher tariffs in export markets than do raw materials and energy products. Alberta’s manufacturing sector, therefore, emerges as a major beneficiary of freer trade. As a result, Alberta’s economy has become more...

ALTERNATIVE FLUID MILK PROCUREMENT SYSTEMS FOR FLORIDA DAIRY FARMERS AgEcon
Nubern, Christopher A.; Kilmer, Richard L..
This article evaluates the effects of alternative fluid milk procurement strategies on the aggregate net revenue of Florida cooperative members. They are (1) supplemental milk obtained from import sources, (2) supplemental milk obtained from a supply plant, (3) increased supply as a result of an expanded production area, and (4) supplemental milk obtained through pooling arrangements with regional dairy cooperatives. The final ranking of a scenario appears to be dependent primarily on the total cost of exports within the model. The optimal procurement strategy for Florida cooperatives should concentrate on reducing the quantity of surplus milk.

Analysis of U.S. Demand for Fresh Tropical Fruit and Vegetable Imports AgEcon
Nzaku, Kilungu; Houston, Jack E..
This paper estimates a demand system for a selected tropical fresh fruit and vegetable imports in to the U.S. using a Linear Approximate Almost Ideal Demand Systems model for the period 1989-2008. Further the paper attempts to capture trade policy and seasonality effects that affect the demand for fresh fruit and vegetable imports. Results show that most of the price elasticities of demand have the expected signs and less than unity magnitude except for tomatoes. Complimentary commodities include bananas and papayas, grapes, and mangoes, peppers and tomatoes and avocados, and tomatoes and cucumber. Substitutes include pineapples and papayas, grapes and papayas, and mangoes and tomatoes. Trade policy and seasonality are also found to affect fresh fruit and...

Competition between the U.S. and West Africa in International Cotton Trade: A Focus on Import Demand in China AgEcon
Muhammad, Andrew; McPhail, Lihong Lu; Kiawu, James.
We estimate the demand for imported cotton in China and assess the competitiveness of cotton-exporting countries. Given the assertion that African cotton producers are ill affected by U.S. cotton subsidies, our focus is the price competition between the C4 countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali) and United States in China. Demand estimates are used to project how U.S. prices affect China’s imports by country. In comparing demand projections, results show that the relationship between the United States and the C4 has more to do with how U.S. prices can affect global prices rather than any substitute or competitive relationship in the Chinese market.

Competiveness of Latin American Exports in the U.S. Banana Market AgEcon
Muhammad, Andrew; Fonsah, Esendugue Greg; Zahniser, Steven.
U.S. banana demand differentiated by country of origin is estimated using the generalized dynamic Rotterdam model. Results indicate that dynamic factors play a significant role in determining the allocation of U.S. banana expenditures across exporting sources. Of particular interest is Guatemala’s increased share and Costa Rica’s decreased share of U.S. banana supply. A number of factors explained why Guatemala replaced Costa Rica as the leading U.S. supplier in 2007. (1) Guatemala is the least expensive source on average. (2) Habit persistence, adjustment costs, and other dynamic factors favor Guatemala’s exports. (3) Given increases in the relative price of Costa Rica’s bananas, the price competition between Costa Rica and Guatemala is highly...

ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF THE U.S.-AUSTRALIA FREE TRADE AGREEMENT AgEcon
Mattson, Jeremy W.; Skripnitchenko, Anatoliy; Koo, Won W..
The general objective of this study is to analyze the economic impact of the recently negotiated U.S. - Australia Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Specific objectives are to estimate changes in trade and prices in different sectors of the U.S. and Australian economies and to determine the impact on U.S. agriculture and the U.S. beef industry in particular. The results of a general equilibrium analysis suggest that the FTA will not have significant effects on the economies of Australia, the United States, or the rest of the world. The United States could achieve gains in the manufacturing sector, but the U.S. agricultural sector could experience small losses as Australia could increase exports of dairy products and beef to the United States. The results of...

Caamal Pat, Zulia Helena.
